Bangladesh’s Hasan Mahmud created history, becoming the first fast bowler after Dale Steyn to take four wickets on the first day of a Test in India.
The first Test match between IND and BAN has started on 19 September. Bangladesh’s young fast bowler Hasan Mahmud created history on the first day of the Test match. He has become the first foreign fast bowler after former South African fast bowler Dale Steyn to take four wickets on the first day of a Test match in India.
This performance of Mahmud shook India’s batting, but thanks to the excellent partnership of Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja, the host team scored 339 runs for 6 wickets by the end of the day’s play.
How was Hasan Mahmud’s performance on the first day?
24-year-old Mahmud, playing his fourth Test match, took 4 crucial wickets for 58 runs, including the wickets of Indian captain Rohit Sharma (6), Shubman Gill (0), Virat Kohli (6), and Rishabh Pant (39). Mahmud’s first 5-over spell shook India’s top batting order. During this spell, he gave only 6 runs in 5 overs with 2 maidens and took 3 wickets, which at one point took India’s score to 144 for 6.
Why is this achievement of Hasan Mahmud special?
This achievement of Mahmud is also special because no foreign fast bowler had achieved such a feat on the first day of a Test match in India since Dale Steyn in 2006. Mahmud’s ability to swing the ball both ways highlighted his ability at the international level.
Despite Mahmud’s success, India held on to the situation thanks to Ashwin and Jadeja. By the end of the first day’s play, Ashwin scored an unbeaten 102, while Jadeja scored an unbeaten 86. The 195-run partnership for the seventh wicket between the two stabilized India’s innings.
Mahmud, who hails from a farmer family near Chittagong, has also been praised by former Bangladesh fast bowlers Allan Donald and Otis Gibson.
About dismissing the Indian batsmen, Mahmud said, “I am very happy. When you take wickets of batsmen who are the best in the world at the moment, it is naturally a special feeling.”
There are four days left in the match, and now all eyes will be on Mahmud’s next performance as the contest between Bangladesh and India continues.
